RubyRuby is the oldest Milking Devon here on the farm, born February 26th, 2002. She was dehorned as a calf. She has not had a calf for several years due to various reasons, before we had her. We are very much hoping that 2012 will see that change & that Ms Ruby will indeed produce a calf for us. If it is a heifer the previous owners of our herd have first choice on her so come on Ms Ruby let's get producing some calves!

Ruby is still in the prime of her life & unless there is something medically wrong with her, should go on producing into her teens if not older. We do not like to cull productive animals here on the farm. When dealing with rare breeds you are also dealing with rare genetics. The older the animals, normally the less mixed the genetics are so we want to do all we can to keep these older cows in production.

All the Milking Devons here on the farm have chains on their necks with a numbered tag. This not only makes for easy identification out in the pasture but allows us to catch hold of them easily when we need to look at them, milk them etc. They are used to wearing these "necklaces" so it is far less stressful for them than putting something on them just when we need to handle them. Ruby's Tag Number is 1.

Garnet is registered with the American Milking Devon Cattle Association (AMDCA).
